Silk Care FAQ

Our garments are crafted from 100% silk — a delicate natural fibre that rewards gentle handling. The guidance below is conservative by design; when in doubt, consult a specialist dry cleaner.

Washing

Can I hand-wash my silk piece?

Our silk garments are labelled Delicate Dry Clean Only, and we recommend following that instruction to protect the fabric and colour. If you choose to hand-wash at your own risk, use cool water (below 30 °C), a pH-neutral silk-specific detergent, and handle the garment without wringing or twisting. Rinse thoroughly in cool water.

Can I machine-wash silk?

No. Machine washing — even on a delicate cycle — can damage the weave, cause shrinkage, and strip the natural lustre. We do not recommend it.

Can I bleach silk?

No. Do not bleach silk under any circumstances. Bleach destroys the silk fibre and will permanently damage the garment.

Can I tumble-dry silk?

No. Keep silk away from tumble dryers and any direct heat source.

Stain Treatment

What should I do if I spill something on my silk?

Act quickly but calmly:

  1. Blot (do not rub) the excess liquid with a clean, dry, white cloth.
  2. Do not apply water directly to a dry-clean-only garment — this can cause a water mark.
  3. Take the garment to a professional dry cleaner as soon as possible and point out the stain and its cause.

Can I treat a stain at home?

We recommend against home stain treatment on dry-clean-only silk. DIY treatments — including diluted white vinegar, baby shampoo, or proprietary stain removers — carry a risk of spreading the stain or leaving a permanent mark. A professional cleaner is the safest route.

Perfume, Sunscreen & Body Products

Is it safe to wear perfume with silk?

Alcohol-based perfume can weaken silk fibres and cause permanent discolouration. Always apply fragrance to your skin and allow it to dry fully before dressing.

What about sunscreen or body lotion?

Oils and chemical sunscreen filters can stain silk and are very difficult to remove. Allow lotions and sunscreens to absorb and dry completely before putting on a silk garment, and avoid direct contact where possible.

Storage

How should I store my silk pieces to avoid creasing?

Fold loosely along natural seam lines and lay flat in a drawer or on a shelf, or hang on a padded hanger. Avoid wire or narrow wooden hangers, which can distort the shoulder seam. Do not compress silk in a tight space or under heavy garments.

Should I use a garment bag?

A breathable fabric garment bag (not plastic) is ideal for longer-term storage. It protects against dust and light without trapping moisture.

Are there any storage conditions to avoid?

Keep silk away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and moth-prone areas. If storing seasonally, ensure the garment is clean before storing — even invisible residue can attract moths.

De-Wrinkling

My silk piece has creases — what is the safest way to remove them?

The gentlest method is to hang the garment in a steamy bathroom for 10–15 minutes and allow the creases to relax naturally. Avoid directing steam or heat directly onto the fabric.

Can I iron silk?

Our care labels specify Cool Iron. If you iron silk, always:

  • Use the lowest heat setting (silk/delicate).
  • Iron on the reverse (inside) of the garment.
  • Place a clean, dry, white cotton pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  • Keep the iron moving — never leave it stationary on silk.

Can I use a clothes steamer?

A handheld steamer can be effective but use it cautiously: hold it at least 5–10 cm from the fabric and keep it moving. Direct, prolonged steam contact can watermark or distort fine silk.
